Young designers pulled out all the stops at the Vodacom Durban July Young Designer Award semifinals held at Greyville on Friday evening.
Most of the designers were from the Durban University of Technology and had to design garments under the theme “The Captain’s Table”.
Fifteen designers were eliminated on Friday in the top ten. The competition judge Greg Wallis said that the designers didn’t disappoint.
“The quality gets better and there are amazing stories behind each garment. I’m very much impressed. For those who didn’t make it through today, we are having a program to support them,” said Wallis.
Designers in the top 10 walked away with R2000 each, and they are all eyeing the grand prize which includes a paid trip to New York Fashion Week and other great prizes.
One of the top 10 designers, Tracy Mvelase, could not contain her excitement. “I’m really excited, don’t even know what to say, but I worked hard to design this dress, and I give credit to my model who has been the best,” said Mwelase.
Martin Steenkamp, who also made through to the top ten, said that his sister was his inspiration.
All eyes are now focusing on the preliminary event of the main show which will take place on the 4th July 2015.
