Pietermaritzburg Regional Court convicted and sentenced Lindelani Mbatha (29) to an effective 18 years imprisonment for sexual assault on Friday.
According to a statement given to the police by the victim and her mother, the victim who was eight-years-old at the time (2012), had gone to Mbatha’s room to fetch some food.
He closed the door, raped her and gave her R5.
However, according to the victim’s mother whose name has been withheld for their safety, the victim did not reveal the incident until she was questioned by her mother for poor
performance at school.
The victim then revealed that she was repeatedly raped twice by the accused on different occasions.
According to Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni from the Pinetown Police Station, a case of rape was subsequently opened and the Pinetown Family Violence and Child
Protection Unit took over the case.
He said that the victim was interviewed which made a strong presentation in court, that resulted in a successful conviction after a couple of remands.
“I would like to commend the work presented in court as it has secured a good conviction for a perpetrator to be removed out of our community and give a stern warning to all perpetrators
to refrain from abusing women and children.
Abuse will not to be tolerated, not only during the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children campaign but 365 days of the year,” added Ngobeni.
