The Umlazi U-section community joined hands with the Culture, Parks and Recreation Department in resuscitating and re-launching How Long Park today, through a colourful beauty pageant.
Miss How Long Park was hosted by the Culture, Parks and Recreation Department, in efforts to get people together, to recognise the wonderful park they have, and encourage them to preserve it as a natural resource.
The head of the department confirmed that they came through to lend a helping hand to the people who had already started good work in making the park. They would offer financial assistance to construct ablution facilities which were dilapidated and re-launch it as a tourist site.
Themba Ngcobo the head of Culture, Parks and Recreation Department said, “We have invested just more than R2million to build the ablution facilities, because it is attracting a lot of people even from overseas, they do come here but there are no ablution facilities.”
According to Ngcobo, the park was an initiative by a homeless man called Landela, who had a vision of creating an area where people would come and enjoy themselves. He used very basic tools to establish a park and hence the Department of Culture, Parks and Recreation took it upon themselves and try to compliment the noble efforts.
Resident of Umlazi-U section, Sihle Mthembu, expressed extended gratitude to the department and assured to carry on good deeds to maintain the state of the park. “People are happy to be here today and we are enjoying the park. We are going to benefit from it in many ways, as we are going to use it to explore hidden talents in the youths and promise to maintain it,” said Mthembu.
The beauty pageant wasglamorous, with young ladies from the area displaying their glittering outfits to impress a panel of judges comprised of key players in the fashion world.
