The atmosphere at the media launch held at Moses Mabhida on the 24th of January, was oozing with confident and vibrant women whom were beaming with success and had a mouthful of success stories to share.
Amongst the guests were HIV activists, community activists, women in business and those also politics.
Whilst there were a few issues raised concerning the sustainability of the program and awards, many women and organizations present applauded the initiative.
Africa First Ladies Awards is an initiative and effort by John Losaka of Vuka Afrika, an NGO whose vision is to bring about unity, peace, growth and stability in the African Continent.
Vuka Afrika wants to recognize and appreciate the great potential of women in general by highlighting their gifts, efforts and initiatives and they hope this will encourage and promote more women like them who are, according to Losaka, “agents of change”.
The first prestigious and glamorous awards will be held in August this year in the city of Durban and will be acknowledging first ladies in the Presidency, Ministers, Premiership, MEC’s, Mayoral, Counselors or Religious Leaders or Pastoral for work done in their communities.
These awards are first of its kind and organisers intend on taking the event globally where women across the world will gather in Africa to witness the great achievements attained by African women across all racial groups on a First Lady status.
