The third annual Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) Newsmaker of the year was launched at the Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Hotel School where four candidates for the 2013 newsmaker were revealed on Thursday night.
This event seeks to identify, reflect upon, as well as celebrate individuals and events that shaped news and grabbed headlines between June 2012 and May 2013.
Announcing the candidates was DUT Journalism’s Advisory Board Chairperson Mary Papayya. The list of nominees contained a variety of candidates ranging from sports to politics.
As she spoke on behalf of the judging panel, Papayya said, “The spotlight on media ethics continues to hog headlines and judges have commended, acknowledged editors and journalists for their role in the KZN region.”
The nominees are as follows:
- Chad le Clos
- The KZN response to storms havoc
- The World-class economic summit (BRICS) and soccer tournament (AFCON) hosted by Durban
- The KZN road to Mangaung- ANC president Jacob Zuma’s re-election. Are the list of candidates who received enormous media coverage across KZN boarders.
All proceeds go towards a bursary for studying Journalism at DUT, and as such the public is encouraged to vote for their favorite Newsmaker by sending an SMS to 34382 with the number of their favorite candidate.
Previous Newsmaker winners have been Hashim Amla in 2011 and AmaZulu FC in 2012. Now all eyes are on October 2013 where the winner for the 2013 Newsmaker of the year will be announced.
