ANGER AS STUDENTS LOCKED OUT

The management of the Coastal KZN College Umbumbulu campus barred students from entering the premises during the achievement ceremony on Tuesday.
Campus Manager Sam Zondi said that the decision came after students allegedly damaged property and intimidated staff last week during a protest over accommodation and National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding.
“On Tuesday there was damage to property and intimidation of staff so we have decided to lock the gates and continue with the event,” said Zondi.
He added that the problems faced by the campus were started at other campuses and the protest then moved to the Umbumbulu campus.
Speaking to Journalismiziko, SRC Central President Nhlanhla Majola said,“We want to know about the outcome of all NSFAS applications and we believe there’s corruption in the allocation of NSFAS on our campus.”
He said they had been waiting for NSFAS allocations but only 45 students had been funded thus far and of those, only 15 qualified for tuition and accommodation.
“We requested a meeting with the Department of Higher Learning but they had said they won’t meet with us with regards to NSFAS,” said Majola.
Majola concluded that they demand that all vacant residence spaces be filled and students be funded as soon as possible
