Disruptions at DUT amid student protests
Classes were disturbed this morning following a protest by the EFF led Student Representative Council (SRC) at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).
The protest began at ML Sultan Crane Growers where a mass meeting was held by the EFFSC. The mass meeting intended to address students’ grievances regarding NSFAS allowances, accommodation, releasing of supplementary results and registrations.
After the meeting, the EFFSC planned to take their memorandum to the Vice Chancellor and DUT management at Steve Biko. They were met by heavily armed police who stopped the large crowd from entering Steve Biko Campus, instructing students that they can only allow student leadership to meet the management. Police fired teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
EFFSC Acting President Phumlani Sithole addressed students saying that the EFFSC are demanding that DUT management attend to those students who have not registered, those who have issues with student financial aid scheme, NSFAS.
“Financial Aid promised that appeals will be sorted,” said Sithole.
DUT is set to release a statement regarding the matter.
