The BRICS countries have become home for many World-class events.
The five BRICS countries – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa –
represent almost 3 billion people, which is approximaely 40% of the world’s population, and have proven to be amazing places to host the World.
Association Secretariat, Mahdi Basadien, said there is an appetite for sport tourism amongst BRICS countries as China, South Africa, India and Brazil have hosted global sporting events and Russia will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
“Brazil hosted the World Cup and will be hosting the Olympics in 2016.” He elaborated in the plenary at the Sport and Event Tourism Exchange conference.
He added, “After the South African World Cup, we held a BRICS summit in Brazil and were shown how to make sport and tourism a priority.”
Chief Financial Officer of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Vinesh Maharaj, believes that the principles of these countries also apply as a vision for sport development.
“We’ve initiated cooperation with national Olympics Committees in the BRICS countries, so there are already discussions about what we actually want to see. Both at the level of the national Olympic Committees and SASCOC, the opportunities are really great,”he explained.
He mentioned that there is a level of growth in terms of performance in these countries, although he believes that they need coaching as SASCOC.
“Looking at the sport there, these BRICS countries are strong. We should engage by sending our players across in terms of training camps, support at that level,” Maharaj added.
It appears that some of these issues will be addressed in the upcoming BRICS summit.
