A grade 12 pupil makes headlines as he searches for a special matric ball partner.
The Durban North College scholar, Deon Govender, who has been previously involved in many charities, wants to spend his special evening by making someone else smile.
This is according to a Facebook message posted on Wednesday by the teen’s mother, Vino Govender.
Govender said, “Dear Awesome people. This Saturday is my son’s matric dance and he has a special request.
He would like his partner for the evening to be someone that has never had the privilege or opportunity to attend a matric dance or never will have that opportunity due
to financial or other restraints.”
The post soon became viral with hundreds of South Africans commending the young man’s gesture and suggesting partners that deserve to have a night of ball gowns and bright lights.
In an interview with News24, the teen explained that a matric ball is an “important night” for him however others may never have a chance to experience this event due to challenges such as financial restraints.
“If I can make a change in someone’s life, it would make me happy,” he added.
In his request the teen insisted that race and gender is not important and, if female, then a dress, hair and makeup will be provided by him.
The teen’s mother said, “Deon has grown up in a home where blessing others is a normal part of life. This is incredible and I am so proud of my son,”
Govender explained that since the post went viral she has received stories from those who could not or will not be able to attend their matric dance because of truly heart-breaking reasons.
She added that because of the overwhelming media response, international designers and companies have requested to sponsor her son’s partner.
The matric ball will take place on Saturday evening at the Durban Country Club where the lucky partner of the teen will be revealed.
Meanwhile, many South Africans continue to salute the young man.
A Cape Town resident, Miriam Cooke, commented on the viral post, “Good for you, Deon.
The world is so much better when people are kind. We can all learn from your example.
I wish you a wonderful Matric Dance and I applaud your parents for raising such a thoughtful
son. May your future be successful!”
