CHILDREN GET NEW UNIFORMS FROM ETHEKWINI MUNICIPALITY

The eThekwini District Operation, Sukuma Sakhe Task Team, handed over new school uniforms to 30 children that were identified during former Premier KZN Zweli Mkhize’s launch of the Orphaned and Vulnerable Childrens’ Programme last year, at the City Hall on Tuesday.
In welcoming delegates and the scholars, councillor and member of the Municipality’s Executive Committee, Zandile Gumede told of the purpose of the hand over.
“We are here to encourage the youth to continue striving the goals they want to achieve,” she said.
Gumede also encouraged the scholars to forward the spirit of giving when they grow up just as the premier had done for them.
“Know that without the Ubuntu spirit, you are a nobody that is why you must ensure that when you grow up, you give back just as Prasa has,” she added.
The initiative was launched by former Premier of KZN Zweli Mkhize, in hopes that government seeks and finds those who need help the most rather than the other way round. The event was the second of its kind where sponsors and the municipality say they hope to raise the number of beneficiaries to more than just 30 as there are a lot of children from needy backgrounds.
“At times, learners want to quit school due to the fact that they do not have proper school uniforms, we simply cannot allow for that to happen,” said executive committee member Nondumiso Cele.
Deputy Mayor, Nomvuso Shabalala emphasized how beneficial the programme is not just to the uniform recipients but to the entire country and world at large.
“Dealing with this programme properly will take our country to the next level as it does door-to-door interventions with people from needy homes. 30 children getting uniforms is a start, we hope to grow as there are too many needy people,” said Shabalala.
She further mentioned that investing in the younger generation is a fundamental key to a winning nation and by helping those less fortunate, the country as a whole moves forward.
An enthusiastic applause echoed when the scholars were given an additional surprise of being taken sightseeing via train by Prasa.
Grade 10 learner, Siyabonga Ntuli (17) from Mtapo High School was overwhelmed by happiness when he received his uniform from the deputy mayor.
“I am happy because I never expected anything of this sort. I wish I could get up and thank everybody personally for all of this. I feel honoured, special and motivated today, what we received, we shall pass on to the next generation,” said Ntuli.
