Almost all pupils at Vukuzakhe Secondary School have returned to school today following yesterday’s incident where scores of pupils inhaled an unknown chemical substance.
When IzikoDUT visited the school this morning, Principal Fuleka Koliwe addressed the teachers and pupils in an assembly. This after some pupils and teachers were hospitalised for inhaling an unknown chemical substance which was emitted from a small ball that the children were playing with.
The principal urged the pupils and teachers not to blame the pupil who allegedly found the ball because “he is only a child”. She also reminded the children not to pick up things they do not know.
“We should not go about picking up things we don’t know, that is a lesson to be learnt from you my children,” says Koliwe.
Pupils who reported they were not feeling well were urged to stay behind the assembly area so that the senior management team would arrange a room for them to undergo some tests.
A nurse from the Prince Mshiyeni hospital, who cannot be disclosed, confirmed that the patients affected by this substance were treated for inhalation of gas and were sent home after they had fully recovered.
