University of Zululand students residing in compounds around their campus live in fear for their lives after residents harass them.
These tenants whom are students from UNIZULU at Kwadlangezwa Campus, complain about their stay in a building that they say has become very risky.
“We have to switch off the lights, close the doors right after everyone comes back from school and make sure our phones have airtime to call someone for help every day,” Zinhle
She added that members of the community are harassing them because they are not from the area.
Ngcobo added that the culprits demand cellphones, money and at times will take their food.
The building they reside at is located 10km away from the university. Despite police being located approximately 8km away from them, however tenants said that there had been
minimal action taken.
Mthunzini Police Constable Vusi Mlangeni said that the issue had been reported numerous times and those they have caught and arrested had been breaking in some other houses
around the area.
Mlangeni added that they are working together with the tenants in finding these culprits and putting them behind bars.
“There is not much I can do to this except to install burglar –guards and to report this to the police but it has been happening for a long time,” said Vela Mkhwanazi, who is the caretaker
of the building.
