Customers urged to return pilchard tin fish products
The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) has recalled all the formal wholesalers, retailer and informal traders to remove and stop selling the 400g pilchard tin Fish in Tomato Sauce and 400g pilchard tin Fish in Chill sauce with immediate effect.
This order comes after the outcomes of the investigation that was conducted by the organisations and revealed that there was a deficiency in the canning process.
The NRCS released a statement on Monday explaining the reason for this urgent recall of these products.
“Some of the cans were comprised during the sauce filling step on the production line therefore could affect the safety of the consumers. The problem manifests itself after months of storage which cause the content of the can to react with the metal of the can.”
The NRSC also revealed that the affected products were manufactured in 2019 by the West Point Processors based in Cape Town and have been distributed nationally to other various retailers in the country.
The NSRC released a list of other product brands that are affected and also issued an easy bear marking on top of the can for easy identification starting with ZST29 and ZSC29.
Below is the list of other affected products:
- Deep Catch
- Prime Ocean
- Shoprite Ritebrand
- Cape Point
- Checkers Housebrand
- U Brand
- West Point
- OK Housebrand
Customers are urged to return the products to shops where they purchased them for refunds.
