The Durban Christian Centre in partnership with the Student Counseling Department at the Durban University of Technology handed out meals to students at Ritson Campus, on Wednesday.
The initiative called “You Matter”, was started by the DCC Jesus Dome, Hillcrest & Phoenix. This initiative is set to take place every Wednesday to tackle hunger in DUT.
DCC’s Pastor Riccardo Willis said that they sat down and found a way to give back to the students.
“This is an active charity from church and we wanted to assure students that they do matter, no matter where they come from. For now, it’s going to be a weekly activity but if the feedback is positive, we will be so happy to come more often,” said Willis.
This program came at a time where DUT students are preparing for their final exams.
DUT EFFSC Chairperson, Buntu Faku said that they welcome this activity and are very pleased with it.
“This is a good activity, we know that some students cannot afford to buy food and it is not right for a student to write an exam on an empty stomach,” said Faku.
DUT student, Wendy Machi was excited about this initiative and said that as students they need programs like this.
“Some students cannot even afford to buy snacks during lunchtime so I am so happy to know that at least on Wednesdays, there is a place I can go to and receive something to eat on campus,” said Machi.
