The Durban University of Technology once again hosted their annual Employee Wellness Day on Thursday at the Sports Centre on the Steve Biko campus.
The Employee Wellness Day has been an on-going event since 2009 and is held to make sure that the DUT staff are all in tip-top shape. It allows proper health
Sam Rajcoomar of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) coordinated and put together the event for all DUT staff members. Rajcoomar highlighted that in order for efficient work performance, an employee’s wellness is of vital importance
“This day has been set aside to investigate or determine the state of wellness of our employees as an employee’s wellness influences production and performance. Our organisation just like others around the world recognises the importance of our employees and we believe the wellness and health of our human resources team are of utmost importance,” stated Rajcoomar.
She also stated that the event caters for every individual’s wellness needs; be it testing for blood pressure, diabetes, psychological wellness or even eyesight testing.
Many exhibitors present at the Wellness Day were attended with the sole purpose of encouraging the employees to live a healthy lifestyle and for awareness on topics such as breast cancer.
“We have attended the Wellness Day as we hope to create awareness around Cancer. We want people to know that there are different types of cancer and that you need to go for regular check-ups. We hope to equip the staff with enough knowledge about cancer so they are able to check themselves on a regular basis for lumps,” said Zama Mkhize, a social worker at the Cancer Association of South Africa.
Employees who needed to relax and unwind for a bit, enjoyed massages from the DUT Somatology Department.
Ayanda Zungu, a Somatology Student said that she believes the Wellness Day is good encouragement for the DUT staff.
“I have given many of the staff members massages and I have noticed that many of them are quite tensed. I feel this will do them all good as it will allow them to get good wellness advice and treatment for any wellness issues they may have. The massages will leave the staff feeling refreshed and ready to get back to work,” mentioned Zungu.
The DUT employees were excited that they were able to have this day just for them to focus on their healthcare.
Linda Arnold, an employee of the DUT Health Sciences Department stated, “I am quite happy that DUT has done something this good for us as some of us are not able to go to the doctor as often as we would like. I do hope that this could take place every 6 months though because it brings us all together as DUT staff.”
