Although it has become a cliché, the Durban University of Technology Residence Life and Student Housing Department continues to take a firm stand in emphasising the importance of education.
This was implemented through the hosting of an inter-residence gala dinner held at DUT’s Sports Centre at Steve Biko campus Friday evening.
The event, being the first of its kind, was described by Student Representative Council Education and Transformation Officer Michael Zulu as one of the educational campaigns currently being prioritised by the institution.
With student housing being the main facilitator of the occasion, the attendees comprised various stakeholders of the department including Green Campaign Initiative representatives, members of the CHC and students from various residences within the DUT community.
Inspirational addresses were delivered by speakers from diverse fields from executives to students themselves.
Student and Campbell Residence House Committee representative Sizwe Ndlovu reminded students that they hold the keys to their own destinies.
Moving with the theme ‘The power is in your hands’, Ndlovu reiterated the ability of students to steer their own lives.
“DUT is leading the fight on HIV, but we should use the power that we possess to protect ourselves and curb this situation,” he said.
Similar messages were given to the crowd as Guest speaker Scientists Zikhona Twabe dwelled on discipline as the key to academic excellence.
“South Africa has amazing opportunities and they won’t come to us unless we have knocked, and we can only knock if we are educated”, she accentuated.
Other speakers elaborated on ‘Making knowledge useful’, ‘How to balance leadership and academics’, and ‘Being proud of your roots.
SRC’s Michael Zulu praised this student housing initiative as he stated that it was staged at the right time when students need to be encouraged to focus on their academics, as it is their core objective.
“As the SRC we support this initiative by student housing and we are looking forward to hosting a similar occasion that will incorporate all DUT students other than in-residence students only,” he said.
Senior Residence Life Officer Sthuthukile Mashabane mentioned that Residence Life incorporates preparation of future circumstances including fitting into the corporate industry hence the importance of such events.
She further stated that Student Housing will include this particular event in the Student Housing Department’s calendar of events as it is viable awareness mechanism.
Despite education being the main focus of the evening, the event was highlighted by brilliant entertainment pieces from poetry, comedy and Berea residence drama society.
