The Durban University of Technology’s Media, Language and Communications Department held its annual Student Awards ceremony on Friday.
The event was held at DUT’s Mansfield Hall and sought to recognise those who have excelled in their academic performance throughout the previous year.
“Our department holds these awards every year because they want to acknowledge students for their hard work and dedication they show towards their studies,” said Top Computer Usage student, Nasiphi Zwane.
The awards were divided into categories that included Most Improved and Top Achiever in Translation Theory and Practice, Interpreting Theory and Practice,
Computer Usage, Communication, Sign language as well as the DUT Student Award and DUT Graduate.
The DUT Student Award, which is awarded to the candidate who achieved the highest percentage for all subjects in a particular year of study, was given to Silindile Mbatha who said that the award has motivated her to put more effort into her studies.
“The awards are presented to top performing students in recognition of their hard work and outstanding achievement and they are also a way of encouraging students to work hard to obtain good marks.
“I really didn’t expect to get an award because I had a friend who was always ahead of me with a few marks and winning this award humbles me and motivates me to
work harder,” she said.
In her a speech, Dr R.L. Makhubu, head of department said that the awards are aimed at motivating students to work hard and take their studies seriously.
