DUT Student housing gives back
It was all smiles and giggles round at the Inchanga Hospice as the Department of Student Housing and Res Life visited the hospice.
The home was transformed into a space filled with food, love, and joy as DUT’s staff and students took over from the volunteers who work at the centre on Saturday, 24 August.
They spent the day serving breakfast and lunch to the patients. They also presented donations which were made up of wheelchairs for patients, microwave, television set, consumable hygiene products, groceries, and more.
Sbongile Zulu, who manages the centre spoke on how donations have helped them since their attempts on asking for assistance from the government have failed numerously.
“Government does not help us, we survive with donations from the community as well as the church. We work with volunteers that receive a stipend monthly, we do not hire anyone as we do not have enough funds,” she said.
Zulu expressed her gratitude to DUT for their support and donations, she wishes that this initiative helps more organisations like Inchanga hospice.
“I’m very happy, I feel very appreciative and grateful. One of the staff members from DUT, Nonhlanhla mbatha identified this place as her mother also works here. She saw that we love to help those who are sick but means of providing for them are very scarce. The visit means a lot to the patients as some of them are not used to seeing people from outside, ” she added.
The outreach project was led by the team leader, Nonhlanhla Mbatha, who works as the budget officer at Student Housing.
“We came here to help, with assistance from the service providers and landlords who supported the project. We managed to get all the donated goods that they did not have before.”
Mbatha further said that the experience was overwhelming as they received a warm welcome from the patients and staff.
“I plead to the Doctors from around the city to come and do a Doctors camp in the hospice as they are in need of medical assistance,” she said.
