ENGLISH WORKSHOP FOR SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS A GREAT INITIATIVE

By: Nqobile Maphalala
Pupils from different local primary schools gathered at Kwa-Dinabakubo Hall yesterday for their monthly workshop brought to them by the Casablanca Lifestyle owners.
The workshop has been running for the past two years and the number of children attending the program increases every month.
The workshop takes place every month and it focuses mainly on the English language to help children improve their reading, speech, language and spelling skills since English is their
second language.
Different grades attend the workshop, from grade R to three.
They have their separate activities of drawing and colouring and from grade 4-7 which consists of reading, spelling, vocabulary, sentence construction, music, drama, memory
games, and arts and crafts.
Jayshree Xulu, Casablanca Lifestyle owner and organizer of the workshop, said that she enjoys dedicating her time and giving back to the community, especially to children.
“English is an official language in which many people use to communicate with each other and most textbooks are in English. Our workshop focuses on grooming the children on how
to read, speak and to communicate better,” said Xulu.
Mbongeni Skhakhane from Casablanca Lifestyle, said that he loves being part of this initiative as it helps children to improve in English and also keeps them away from the
streets.
Skhakhane said, “I help Jay by translating what she says to the children in IsiZulu, because most of the children are not good in English and so that they know what is required from
them.
But we encourage the children to answer questions asked in English so they improve and learn the language at the same time.”
Qiniso Dlamini, a learner at this workshop, answered most of the questions asked with confidence.
Refreshments were served at the end of the workshop as a token of appreciation to all the learners who came to attend the workshop despite the cold and rainy weather.
