Students Showcase Businesses at Expo
Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Lekgotla at the Durban ICC.
The EDHE Legkotla is a programme designed to develop student entrepreneurship and skills, with a focus on supporting students.
DUT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Thandwa Mthembu, expressed his excitement when he welcomed guests to the conference. Mthembu said student entrepreneurs must get support.
“It is still possible for our young people not to conform necessarily to what already exists but think innovatively and creatively about a new world they could create and fit in,” he said.
The conference includes a students’ business expo, discussions and providing learning platforms and voice for student entrepreneurs.
Student entrepreneurs from universities across the country traded goods on day 1 of the conference as it gave the opportunity for students to gain customers from the delegates in attendance. DUT jewellery design student, Kaylie showcased her jewellery there.
“Students from our department have created a beautiful state of the art jewelry and we hope that we gain customers from this conference,” she said.
This year’s lekgotla takes place under the theme of entrepreneurship through the arts and it has been curated by the faculty of arts and design at DUT. With the conference’s focus being entrepreneurship in the arts, Executive Dean: Faculty of Art and Design at DUT Rene Smith said that ” for the arts sector to achieve the kind of traction we are looking for when we truly appreciate the artistic practice.”
