Ethekwini Mayor James Nxumalo and the executive committee took a tour to Albert Park on Tuesday 11 February, notoriously known as Woonga Park.
The tour was an attempt to alleviate the crime in the city of Durban and decrease the population of homeless people..
Seeing the mayor accompanied by Metro Police alarmed and aggravated some of the residents who then fled the area.
IN his address to the crowd, Nxumalo explained and ensured the crowd that he is not the enemy but he is there to help them.
The mayor highlighted issues on crime, unemployment and the importance of the people living at Woonga Park to get their identity documents so that they could vote. He promised to help them get the necessary documents in order for them to get jobs.
“Many of you are here because of social issues and living conditions at home,” said Nxumalo as he emphasized on why they need to find jobs and be rehabilitated.
Majority of the people staying at the park admitted to wanting a better life and to stop smoking the drug and also promised that if they had the assistance, they could break away from the addiction.
A follow up meeting is scheduled to take place at the City Hall with the Woonga Park residents to make sure they get the necessary assistance that they require.
