eThekwini Municipality appoints interim City Manager
Deputy City Manager, Sipho Cele has been appointed as the acting City Manager. This comes after the city’s executive council’s decision to put current manager, Sipho Nzuza, on special leave.
Nzuza was arrested by the hawks last week for his alleged connection with the multi-million solid waste tender which also involved former eThekwini Mayor, Zandile Gumede.
Nzuza appeared at the commercial crimes court last week for charges of fraud, corruption and maladministration. He was later released on R50 000 bail.
A special council meeting was summoned by the eThekwini Municipality after the court appearance to discuss the matter further.
The eThekwini Municipality spokespersons, Msawakhe Mayisela said that Cele will hold the fort for the next two weeks.
“Cele will ensure the City lives up to its constitutional mandate of providing quality service,” said Mayisela.
He also added that the council has requested to be given space while internal legal processes are unfolding, during the course of the special leave.
Everyone who was implemented in the multi-million solid waste tender was investigated by the hawks and was stripped of their luxurious vehicles and properties.
Former eThekwini Mayor had to step down as Mayor at the time. Zandile supporters have welcomed Nzuza and are also in full support of him. This is an ongoing case that is still under investigation.
