Five dead, ten injured after crash at Folweni
A tragic car crash claimed five lives on Sunday morning at Folweni Township, south coast of Durban.
Two vehicles, a minibus taxi, and a small vehicle collided head-on, on the M35 highway at Folweni. The accident happened in the early morning of Sunday before 06:00 am. On the scene, sealed and empty bottles of alcohol were discovered.
According to the paramedic services on scene, five occupants suffered serious injuries during the incident and had unfortunately passed away before paramedics arrived. They were declared dead on the scene while other passengers were taken to hospital.
Passengers from the minibus taxi sustained injuries and they were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
One of the family members of the five deceased Fika Njapha said they were inconsolable by the car crash.
“What hurts the most is that our son was not even drinking and it just happened that he went out with his friend during the weekend, only for him to not come back home alive,” said Njapha.
The South African Police Service confirmed that a case of culpable homicide was opened at Folweni police station.
