Umzinto police apprehended house robbery suspects in Umkomaas after a high-speed chase from Pennington in the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday last week.
An alert sent by a concerned neighbour led police to investigate at a house on Elizabeth Avenue, Pennington. According to KZN police Spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker, the suspects had fled before police arrived.
“Police interviewed the 37-year-old complainant who gave them a detailed description of the suspects and their getaway vehicle,” said Naicker.
The suspect’s descriptions and getaway car were immediately circulated on the SAPS radio communication channel.
According to Naicker, Sergeant Mxolisi Mnyandu and Constable Preshaan Ishwarlal were at the Park Rynie off-ramp searching for the suspects when they noticed a Toyota Corolla fitting the description of the car being sought, travelling north on the N2 freeway.
“The driver disregarded the police blue lights, siren and police efforts to stop them and tried to speed away. Constable Ishwarlal radioed for backup and more members of the K9 Unit, Scottburgh SAPS and the Park Rynie Road Traffic Inspectorate joined in the chase and the suspects were stopped at the Umkomaas off-ramp,” Naicker said in a statement.
Police found two wardrobe drawers containing an assortment of items as well as the Samsung TV on the rear seat of the car. The suspects have been detained and are expected to appear in the Scottburgh Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 17 June 2014.
