“HANDS OFF THULI”
By: Nhlanhla Mthembu
The Right to Know Campaign (R2K) held a public protest against the harassment of the public protector’s and her office, outside Durban City Hall on Friday.
R2K feels strongly that the continued and unwarranted harassment of the Public Protector poses a threat not only to her and her office, but also to the democracy of the people of South Africa.
Since Madonsela sent a letter last month to President Jacob Zuma asking him to give details on when was he going to respond to the recommendations in her report on his Nkandla homestead, she has come under attack from the ANC and some alliance structures.
In her report, Madonsela recommended that Zuma must pay back a percentage of the upgrades at his Nkandla residence that are not related to security.
R2K campaign believes that Advocate Madonsela has done her job thoroughly, courageously, professionally and according to the Constitution and the relevant laws of the country.
The campaign received the following comments from the public:
“They say that she (Thuli Madonsela) is a spy, a CIA agent but it labelled. It’s an open trend among all parties that if you don’t like someone and you ground them as a CIA agent hoping maybe she can sideline and say whatever she said is wrong. So, that’s not the way to deal with the public protector and that’s not the way to engage with the public protector. It is nothing but an open tritely that if you speak against us we ground you as spy and CIA agent.”
“We as R2K were against secrets happening in government sectors especially concern public, we believe that we must live in an open and democratic society and one of those values is transparency from our leaders. Our leaders use their offices and occupation to doing what is against Law and when Thuli Madonsela report that some information is not corresponding from situation such as Inkandla Report, they turn and say she is an agent and a spy she is being used by the CIA. They do not say what Thuli has said instead they labeled her as a bad influence in the public, being an agent according to law is simply means liable for treason and that you can be prosecuted without trial and so far that is how public prosecutor is being labelled, we here today to say hands of from uThuli Madonsela and her office.”
“I do not know what these people are doing, which party do they represent? I do not know anyone named Thuli Madonsela why should I know? What does he/she does for me?”
“I do know President Jacob Zuma and I have heard that he used our money building his home but I don’t understand how that is our money because he get paid a lot for his position.”
“I am not aware of current threats against Thuli, but with Mr Zuma’s situation yes we need that money back maybe it can make difference to someone’s life than what he has chosen to spend it on, indoda kumele idle izithukuthuku zezandla zayo (man shall eat what he worked for). If really there are threats against Thuli they are unnecessary and they should stop, she is there to look out for us as public, she is our eyes and ears and has every right to expose any wrong doing without any fear or favor. We live in a Democratic country and our leaders should accept that Thuli is no CIA spy but protecting us as public against people like them.”
