HOSTEL KILLINGS ON THE RISE

A man died after a gun battle at the Durban’s Glebelands hostel in Umlazi earlier this week.
The Glebelands hostel has seen 14 people assassinated this year alone due to various reasons believed to be politically-related and other conflicts.
Mbuyiseni Khambule, a Glebelands hostel resident said that some of these incidence can be resolved without any violence.
“We plead with the government to give us security,” he said.
Residents say the recent spate of violence is because people have to pay bribes in order to secure rooms.
“We live in a very dangerous environment not knowing when the next gun will fire, always
looking over your shoulder to see if no one is following you. We have families to come back to, which is why we request that government improves police visibility in the area,” said Manqoba Msomi, a residence.
The gunmen reportedly fled the scene when the police were trying to gain access into the hostel.
According to an article published in The Times on Monday, KwaZulu-Natal Police Spokesman Major Thulani Zwane said that officers had been at the hostel on Sunday.
“Police were deployed to monitor the hostel and they are at the hostel daily. The deceased
was shot outside the hostel,” he added.
The motive of the killing is still unknown.
