The Hammersdale Talent initiative, in partnership with the Ulwazi Group Youth Mentorship programme, staged the Mr and Miss Hammersdale 2014, in Mpumalanga Township this Saturday.
The Mpumalanga community hall was full to capacity with family and friends who came to support their loved ones.
In her opening remarks, Ulwazi Group Deputy Chairperson Sindy Mabizela, said, “the aim for this pageant is to identify two worthy young people who will serve as role models and ambassadors for Ulwazi Group and the Hammersdale community.”
The contestants, aged from 18 to 25, were selected from auditions and a selection test that was written a week before the event.
The Hammersdale Talent Chairperson, Lindiwe Mchunu, said that it was not about finding the handsome guy and the most beautiful lady, but it was about empowering the youth through entertainment.
“We have hosted many pageants that winners won on looks and answering a simple question from the judges. However, this year the tables have turned and we have selected young adults that are doing something positive in life,” Mchunu said.
The audience was entertained by a variety of local talent. Performances included the Mpumalamga Mass choir, GhettoChild, Dj Brazo, comedy from Umuthi Productions and many more.
Ward Councillor Lucky Mngwengwe said that the pageant was an excellent initiative and it will empower the youth to take education seriously.
Winners Fundiswa Khoza and Thembelani Mdungwa were speechless.
Fundiswa is studying Civil Engineering at Mangosuthu University of Technology and Thembelani is doing his final year in Bcom Accounting at the University of KwaZulu Natal.
“I did not expect to win because the competition was tough, but I am proud of myself as I gave it my all,” said Fundiswa.
Thembelani said he is glad he won and he believes that he made his mother proud.
Courtesy of Ulwazi Group, the winners were each awarded R10 000 to further their studies and also earned the title of Ulwazi Group, Hammersdale, ambassadors.
