The Jesus Dome adjacent to the N3 highway went up in flames on Tuesday evening in Durban.
Eyewitnesses said that they heard a massive explosion and then flames followed. Emergency fire services worked tirelessly to put off the fire that took them about three hours to put off, however the dome had already burnt.
Various emergency services were on scene and no injuries were reported at the early stages of the fire but later one police officer that was diverting traffic, was hit by a passing car and was immediately rushed to hospital.
Major Thulane Zwane, SAPS KZN spokesperson said, “We have not yet determined the cause of the fire but we are still investigating.”
This event was one of the top ten trending topics on Twitter on Tuesday night and people were saddened by it.
Sinethemba Mazibuko, @Snett_M said, “Jesus dome burnt down in Durban. I feel like the law is too weak to protect the infrastructure. I mean people burn as the please in SA.”
Keagan Harmon, @Keagan_Harmon added, “ISIS called out the Muslims to do Jihad during Ramadan. The Jesus Dome got set on fire last night. Coincidence? I think not, be safe out there.”
Church members of the Durban Christian Centre, (DCC) gathered near the church after the fire was put out and worshiped through songs.
The DCC Jesus Dome representatives could not be reached for comment and their Berea branch was not willing to comment.
A congregant at DCC who did not want to be revealed said, “At this moment the board members are at a meeting and we are awaiting communication as to where to from here.”
She added, “What we know for now is that the church will be held at Kingspark Stadium this Sunday as the sermon will be held there.”
