Jailed hip hop star Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye is expected to apply for bail at the Protea Magistrates Court in Soweto Friday, 12 September.
Maarohanye successfully petitioned the South Gauteng High Court to hear his appeal application in July. He is now trying to get appeal bail. Maarohanye’s lawyer, Rudi Krause, told the SABC News that his client will appeal all convictions and his 25-year sentence as reported by the Independent Online.
His first attempt to get leave to appeal was in February this year, only two months after he was sentenced for four counts of murder and reckless driving. The petition to appeal was filed in the High Court in Johannesburg in March.
“Murder charges are simply unsustainable. He [Maarohanye] should be convicted for culpable homicide,” said Kruase during a court appeal.
Maarohanye and co-accused Themba Tshabalala were effectively sentenced to 25 years in jail for a drag racing incident that claimed the lives of four pupils, and seriously injuring two who were left brain damaged.
The sentence included four years for attempted murder, driving under the influence of drugs and racing on a public road. For the use of drugs, driving under the influence of drugs and racing on a public road, they got a year for each count. They were sentenced on December 5, 2012.
The NPA said that it will oppose the bail application.
