KwaMashu shack dwellers await in vain for promised housing
Residents of informal settlements in KwaMashu K section continue to wait seemingly endlessly for their promised RDP houses.
The residents of the area say they have been complaining for years to the ward councillor about the unsatisfactory of their living conditions, but to no avail, their issues have not yet been resolved. The residents live in structures made of iron and wood.
Thembisile Shezi, a resident of the settlements, said her life in the settlements has brought immense struggles and suffering.
“We live in a place that is full of crime and we are exposed to amaphara (nyaope addicts) who steal electrical cables and our belongings to buy nyaope. The rate of illegal electricity connections is also high, we live in constant fear of electricity running out,” she said.
Zodwa Zungu, who also resides in the settlements said they have complained numerous times to the ward councillor, who made empty promises.
“In 2019, a soil sample was taken from this area to determine if the area was suitable for RDP construction- we never got any feedback as promised by our ward councillor,” she stated.
Zungu also said that the last thing they heard from the councillor was that the money allocated for RDP construction was available. Although they have not yet received any notice of evacuation for RDP construction.
