MARIANNRIDGE RESIDENTS ANGERED BY FILTH

By: Erin Skeef
Residents of the old section in Mariannridge, in Mariannhill, are angered by the filth that surrounds the community.
This comes after refuse bins in the area were destroyed by striking residents and have since not been replaced.
This lead to residents destroying community property, including the refuse bins, that were provided by Durban Solid Waste.
The community is now left with no refuse bins and has resorted to dumping their garbage in any given spot.
They are now pleading to DSW to provide them with new refuse bins.
Derrick Dunn, who lives in the area, said that kids in the neighbourhood are often forced to play amongst the dirt as the area is surrounded by filth and this often results in poor
health.
The square, a spot where cars usually park, is now consumed by dirt.
Residents say the Filth in this place is too much, the smell is even worse.
“We have nowhere to park our cars because the square is surrounded by dirt.
Something needs to be done about it,” said Lucinda Cloete, a community member.
Residents have claimed that they have contacted the local counsellor numerous times to assist with the matter, however nothing has changed.
DSW picks up the garbage, but after just a few days the Garbage is back.
Mariannridge Local Counsellor Mduduzi Gumede stated that he has informed DSW about the lack of refuse bins in the area.
“I am aware of the complaints coming from Mariannridge.
However there are procedures that need to be followed before we can replace the refuse bins,” said Neeri Governder,
DSW Public Relations OfficerResidents are hopeful that the area will be restored to its former clean state and they are relying on DSW to assist them. DSW has ensured that the refuse bins would be replaced.
