A forty-two-year woman who was reported missing a week ago was found buried in a shallow grave in Sweetwaters on Friday.
Police said that they arrested a 26-year-old suspect who allegedly met Phumzile Mkhize at her work place in KwaMashu on June 06. She was never seen after she left her office with the suspect. Three suspects were found with her car in Sweetwaters near Pietermaritzburg and the police made an arrest.
Mkhize’s family reported her missing on 8 June to KwaMashu police.
Police Spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said they were able to find who was responsible for Mkhize’s disappearance but the motive for the murder was still unknown.
Detectives from in Inanda, the police’s search and rescue unit exhumed her body. Naicker said investigations revealed that she was murdered shortly after she left work.
“It is tragic that what was a missing person’s case has now been confirmed as a murder,” said police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on June 17 to face a murder charge.
This is one of many such cases this year. In May, Ilanga newspaper reported that a missing 14-year old boy was found dead in Clermont. Police told the newspaper that the boy was later dead in a bush after a week-long search.
