An Umzinto family was arrested after a search by police at their home uncovered guns, ammunition and equipment belonging to South African Police Services.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said, “Umzinto detectives gathered intelligence regarding firearms that had been used in an attempted murder case and raided the suspects’ homestead.”
At the suspects home, police seized an R5 rifle with three magazines, a 9mm Norico pistol loaded with nine live rounds of ammunition, two bullet proof vests, two police reflective jackets, a crime scene jacket, a can of teargas, a can of photographic spray, a pair of handcuffs, 38 shotgun rounds and 285 R5 rounds of ammunition.
Naicker said, “Police equipment, other than the firearms and ammunition may have been stolen from a SAPS vehicle that was broken into in 2012. The firearm will be forwarded to the SAPS Forensic Department for ballistic tests to determine if they had been used to commit any other offences.”
The suspects, a 37-year-old mother, her husband and their 20-year-old son are expected to appear at the Umzinto Magistrates Court soon.
