MTN has launched its new commercial 5G network service in South Africa, 5G is the newest mobile network that offers unlimited speed, ultra low latency and allows user to have better internet connection.
This service is only available in some parts of the country that are in the Western Cape, Free State, Eastern Cape and Gauteng province.
The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has provided MTN with a temporary spectrum which allows them to use the 5G network.
In an interview with Broadband MTN SA chief executive Godfrey Motsoa said that using the spectrum has enabled them to boost capacity and performance.
MTN offers 5G ready handsets and routers for users to access the network and worked with Huawei, ZTE and LG group. It also created a price plan for users to choose which one works best for them.
The increased and improved productivity that the 5G network offers will benefit gamers, digital creators and industries.
Siliziwe Sifo, Digital creator said she is keen on using the latest network.
“I cannot wait to use the network. It will help me a lot when it comes to uploading videos on my YouTube channel. Now I can upload more than one video a day without having to waste time,” she said.
Nicholas Kurwaisimba, Sales consultant at MTN in Durban said that it is unfortunate for them they do not offer 5G services because they do not have sites that support the new network in Durban.
Kurwaisimba also added that they have been getting requests from customers who want 5G services.
Motsoa pleaded with the President, ICASA, and communications minister to give them a permanent spectrum. He believes that the spectrum will provide more capacity and capability to fuel digital revolution and more transformation for the country.
