A Durban University of Technology student residing at City Residence was mugged on his way from campus earlier this week.
Minenhle Nxele (19) was coming from school late in the afternoon around 16h30 when he walked pass a group of men nearby his residence.
He said that they cornered him and pulled a knife, threatening to stab him if he did not give in to their demands.
“They eventually took my phone, wallet and laptop and it sad because all this happened near a police station,” said Nxele.
According to Sindiswa Zothwana who works at KFC, afternoons bring fear for taxi commuters who use this route every day, especially women.
“It has become a normal thing to us to see a person being robbed, there is nothing we can do because we also fear for our lives. Even though there is a police station nearby, but they are always indoors and I think it will be better if there is more police visibility,” she concluded.
It has become a usual occurrence for people to be robbed during broad daylight without any leagl action being taken against them.
However according to Constable P. Mavundla, they (police) are aware of this situation but they are worried that people do not report these incidents.
“No cases have been reported to us at the police station and we cannot do anything about it if it not reported,” said Mavundla.
