MUT student murder: Zolile Khumalo’s roommate testifies
A testimony from Zolile Khumalo’s roommate, Nosipho Bhengu provides details of her friends’ last moments during the trial at the Durban High Court on Tuesday morning.
The Mangosuthu University of Technology student Zolile Khumalo was gunned down by ex-boyfriend at the Lonsdale student residence in central Durban in May 2018.
Thabani Mzolo’s lawyer, Bonokwakhe Dlamini asked the witness, who was the accused with and how they gained access into the deceased’s room.
Bhengu confirmed that Mzolo was with a friend and that friend had turned into a state witness. She explains the gruesome events of that day saying that Mzolo was carrying a blue bag and reached into it and took out a gun.
“Thabani then pulled out a chair and sat on it in front of us and proceeded to ask Zo why she was making a fool out of him and “Zo kept asking him what she had done wrong”, said Bhengu
Bhengu explained in court how the accused instructed Khumalo to stand up and give him a kiss, “She stood up fearing for her life.”
Moments later when Bhengu moved away from the two to call for help near their window she heard gun shot and saw Khumalo lying on the floor in a pool of blood.
Moreen Khumalo who is a family member of the deceased says that they are still pleased with the court proceedings.
“It is still going well as we can see witnesses are providing evidence that is showing that Mzolo is the killer.”
