A Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) student murderer, Thabani Mzolo has been found guilty of shooting and killing his girlfriend and fellow MUT student, Zolile Khumalo in May 2018.
Khumalo was shot three times by Mzolo and declared dead on the scene. The incident took place at Khumalo’s student residence, when Mzolo entered the residence under the pretense of visiting someone else.
The judgment proceedings started on Monday at the Durban High Court. The court on Monday saw Judge, Nompumelelo Radebe introducing all the evidence to determine whether Mzolo had intentionally killed Khumalo.
The State managed to prove that Mzolo shot and killed Khumalo after she had ended the relationship with him. The State found that Mzolo did not accept the termination of their romantic relationship.
The court rejected Mzolo’s evidence that Khumalo shot and killed herself with a gun. Mzolo was facing charges of murder, being in possession of an illegal firearm that has no serial number and authorised bullets.
On Monday, MUT students gathered outside the Durban High Court, calling out for justice to be served and condemning gender-based violence.
