Nongoma community believes mob justice solves everything
Friday, on the 25th, the community of Nongoma took matters into their own hands by beating up a 16-year-old boy, who is believed to be a thug. Young boys become thieves at a very young age in this community.
A grief stricken father, Senzo Ndlovu, says he is overwhelmed with gratitude for being given a second chance by the Nongoma community with his son after he was brutally attacked.
The Nongoma father said he was left shattered when police arrived at his home around 5 am to tell him and his wife that their 16-year-old son had been be stoned to almost death.
His son, who cannot be named as a child victim of a crime, was left fighting for his life in hospital following the attack.
“I have never experienced pain like that before in my life, I know this community has a lot of young boys who are out of control I didn’t think my son could be one of them” said Ndlovu.
“My wife went to the hospital but things were not looking up, the doctors told us that he might not be able to walk again and that way terrifying to hear,” he added.
The boy is said to have been trouble.
“This boy stole from a lot of neighbours and he did this repeatedly. He is a nyaope addict so I think that is the main reason why he stole. We, as the community thought beating him up was the best solution since he would not stop and the parents were not doing much as to making the boy stop his wrong doing, let this be a lesson to the others as well” said a community member who refused to be mentioned.
The parents of this young boy say they do not believe that their little angel would do all the bad things the community members are mentioning
“Our boy is always an angel in this house and we do not understand why he would go and steal whilst we provide everything for him, he has never shown any signs of being an addict or a thief in our eyes” said the mother.
The parents are certain that the community is falsely accusing their son.
“His parents are always at work so I think they do not know what happens when they are not around, why would we lie about something like this? This boy has wronged us and he deserves the beatings we gave him” said Lwazi Ndlazi a member of the community
“The municipal people need to do something about these young boys, they steal, kill and rape at a very young age, maybe introduce certain programmes we are tired of fearing our own sons” Ndlazi added
The police are still investigating the issue.
