An unbearable smell led neighbours to the rotting corpse of a 82-year-old woman in her home at Umlazi ‘M’ section on Sunday afternoon.
According to the neighbours, a smell of a dead animal was coming from Ringi Makhathini’s house since last week Friday.
Sibongile Shange who found the body said that they thought it was one of Makhathini’s pets“She had a lot of cats and dogs and some of them died.
Just last week the neighbours removed a dead dog that was decaying. We just assumed it was one of her dogs again,” said Shange.
Shange found the body when she went to check what was really causing the smell“The smell was unbearable and was coming from inside the house which was strange. I went
to knock but nobody answered,” she said.
Shange added that she then called the police, who took Makhathini’s body to the mortuary.
“She has no family or relatives we know off, we as neighbours are going to be responsible for her burial,” added Shange.
Another neighbour, Fezeka Sithole, said Makhathini, lived alone and was often sick because of old age.
“She lived alone in her shack. Her daughter is mentally unstable and nobody has seen her in a long time. As neighbours we take turns on watching her but most of the time everyone is
busy, that why nobody checked on her,” said Sithole.
Nkosinathi Khanyile, from Umlazi South African Police Services, said Makhathini died of natural causes and they believe she died in her sleep and encourages communities to look
after senior citizens, especially the ones with no family.
