A pipe burst and caused a hole in a major road in Shallcross next to Chatsworth.
The hole measured around 4 m in radius. Reports of a hole caused by a burst water pipe were given to the police. Emergency engineers attended the scene and start repairing the damaged road.
The water supply was cut-off as both lanes were closed for emergency repair work to be carried out. Engineers have since been working on the problem, which also include a damage to the drain and sewer network.
EThekwini Water Services municipal construction worker, Lwandile Skhayi said, “It could not be estimated when the road would re-open but it is likely to be closed for several days. It will all depend on the extent of the problem.”
People are urged not to walk near the site due to the danger of falling in or the risk of the road collapsing.
Aqualine Durban transport bus routes 120, 122, 131 from Shallcross to Hillview through the city has been diverted. Municipal spokesman Sabelo Dlomo said that it would obviously cause a build-up of traffic during peak hours. He said it also proves that there are a lot of very old drains below the ground in that area.
Local resident Samuel Pillay said, “There have been several occurrences of burst water pipes in this area last year. It is going to cause a lot of inconvenience to people but it is necessary for the work to be completed and done right.”
