Two Douglasdale police officers that are at the center of a brutality video that has gone viral have not been suspended.
While police have confirmed a criminal case has been opened, the video has reached up to nearly 100 000 views on YouTube in the past 24 hours.
A man who identified himself only as Shane who is one of the victims on the scene said on the video that he and his friend Anton were preparing to go home late on Friday when they
were approached by the two Douglasdale police officers.
Shane added that while one officer pointed a gun to his head, the other grabbed Anton and started choking him.
After Anton passed out, Shane said that the officer searched his lifeless body.
The complainant then opened a case.
“Numerous charges will be added after we have reviewed the video footage,” said Douglasdale Police Spokesperson Warrant Officer Balan Muthan.
Amongst other comments on YouTube was Talen Tom who said, “If anything, this is call to all South African citizens to protect themselves from the police with the strongest force
Police have, for too long, taken advantage of their authority to victimize the South African public and it is the duty of every South African to make sure they are safe be it from
criminals or SAPS (and in many cases that is the same thing).”
Thato Brian, an alleged victim of police brutality residing in Cato Manor, said that police treat different races differently. “When it’s a white boy, it’s police brutality. But when it’s a
black boy, no you know how blacks are: the police were just doing their job.
(This) I was made to believe by the police when it happened to me,” added Brian
