Poor service delivery poses health hazards in Mayville
Mayville residents call out for rescue on burst sewage system and popped pipes that cause stench from faeces left on the streets.
Mayville, Cato Manor residents are still using chemical mobile toilets provided by eThekwini Municipality. Residents blame ward Councillor, Mzimuni Ngiba for negligence and not taking any actions against poor toilet system that they have been using for over 18 years.
These toilets are situated near the main road of the area and have caused health hazards especially to the children that play around the area. In 2018 residents protested against poor service delivery causing havoc in the streets of Mayville. This resulted in the ward councillor being expelled.
Business woman Ndumiso Mhlongo from the affected area is concerned about the health of her customers.
“We are suffering from pesticides such as flies. Smell from disposed material Faeces by the streets and in drains is causing a harm to our customers, our service is under rated and we losing a large number of customers daily. No one will consider our service as a professional one if we continue to operate under this condition,’’ said Mhlongo.
EThekwini Municipality Water and Sanitation spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said that the municipality is working hard to solve the issue at hand. The most effected residents will be contacted for proper housing.
“Water is life. We need to supply good service when it comes to pure water and proper sanitation. We are prepared to work hard to help our people”, said Mayisela.
The cleaning team is expected to start working in the area by the end of this month.
