RESIDENTS FURIOUS OVER APARTMENTS FLOODING WITH TOILET WASTE

Residences of the Phezulu Shelter in Umngeni Road say they are sick and tired of living in apartments that are bursting with toilet waste, have no light bulbs on the corridors and are forced to use one toilet for all genders whereas the rent amount continues to increase.
Residences say they can’t excrete anywhere within the flat because every toilet is blocked and over flowing with human waste. They further said that they have raised this issue with their landlord but he seems to not be sorting out the problem.
Thando Magwaza said that she has been living in the flat for three years and complains about the monthly rent increases whereas the standard of living continues to decrease.
“I have been staying here for three years and the rent money keeps increasing every year with an amount of R100.00 but there is no change seen yet we do expect it. The owner doesn’t care about us yet he needs us to survive,” said Magwaza.
Magwaza further said that the flat is overcrowded, which then challenges hygiene and also is occupied by most non-South Africans.
Another resident is worried about the safety of her children who have to use the dark toilets along with men living in the flat.
“The toilets are dark and we share the same toilets as both different genders. Therefore children are not safe at all because they might be raped in such dark toilets. The owner said that he will never insert lights in the toilets and at the sink,” said Smiso Xingwana.
The owner of the building refused to comment when confronted by JournalismIziko about this issue.
