SASSA launches online grant application portal
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), launched an online grant application portal where applicants can register online for certain grants on Monday.
According to SASSA, the pilot project at this stage will only be allowing social grants applicants to register for child support, older persons and foster child grants.
“This should be a relief to grant applicants as it will save them the inconvenience of standing in queues at SASSA offices in order to apply for their grants,” SASSA said.
SASSA said the online application will help in eliminating the applicant’s risks of getting infected with the COVID-19 virus because people will not need to gather at public places in order to apply.
Applicants will be able to access the self service portal using computers and their mobile phones. SASSA said the applicants need to have an email address to sign up and be able to log in to receive more services. The applicants will be receiving feedback from the agency through sms or email.
“The turnaround time is 10 days, provided the applicant supplies all the stipulated documents such as identity documents of applicant and spouse as well as banking details among others,” said SASSA.
SASSA said the testing of the system will start from 14th September 2020 till 25th September 2020. All the required documents need to be certified by a commissioner of oaths.
Amanda Zono, is one of the few people who are excited about this invention.
“I’m happy that the government has created this now I will be able to apply for a grant using my phone. Through this I will be avoiding long queues and risking getting infected,” she said.
The agency said other grants will also be added to the portal if this trial system is successful.
