Second suspect arrested for police killing
The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation and South African Police Service (SAPS) arrested a second suspect linked to the murder of a Warrant Officer Phiwayinkosi Magwaza.
The second suspect aged 42 was arrested on Thursday morning at KwaMashu hostel and was allegedly found with the firearm, a 9mm pistol belonging to the deceased.
“On 27 August 2020, Warrant Officer Magwaza was shot and killed whilst he was asleep in his house. The suspect made off with his service pistol,” said KwaZulu-Natal Hawks spokesperson, Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.
Mhlongo said after Magwaza’s death, a case of murder was reported at Melmoth police station and the hawks continued with the investigations which led to the arrest of the first suspect.
The first suspect Sanelisiwe Mpungose, was arrested in September and made her first court appearance on September 11 at Melmoth Magistrate Court.
“She is still in custody and will appear again at the same court on the September 23,” said Mhlongo.
Mhlongo said the second suspect was charged with possession of an unlicenced firearm and had appeared in Ntuzuma Magistrate Court.
