Sibusiso Mpungose: Killer dad sentenced to 4 life terms
Sibusiso Mpungose, the Durban father who confessed to hanging four children, was sentenced to 4 terms of life imprisonment in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday.
Judge Sharmaine Balton spoke directly to the 44-year-old father and said that he deserves to be removed from society for his heinous crimes, “the sentence must serve as a deterrent to others”.
During his plea in October, Mpungose said that he killed his children because he believed his wife was cheating on him.
The government welcomed the decision by the high court, Government spokesperson Phumla Williams said that this sentencing should serve as a warning.
“The government will continue to strengthen its instruments that seek to ensure the safety of its citizens, especially the vulnerable. Access to justice for victims of gender-based violence is one of the priorities of the government,” said Williams.
Mpungose is set to appear in court later this month to face an additional charge of rape in an unrelated incident, which allegedly occurred days before he took the life of his children.
