Six people were rushed to hospital after they were injured when three taxis collided at the intersection of Old Dutch and ML Sultan Road on Monday.
According to Leon Furry from Life Response Ambulance Service, the incident happened at the robots on the intersection of N3, the incoming of Old Dutch before Warwick Avenue.
“It seems like a taxi has collided into the back of the other, it had a chain reaction and few taxis crashed into each other,” Furry said.
A street vendor Zandile Jaca, who witnessed the incident, said that one taxi was off loading in the middle of the road when another collided into it.
She said, “The robot was closed for cars and we suddenly heard a loud noise that sounded like a collision of cars.”
“People rushed to the scene and we were relieved to find that no one died, only minor injuries (were sustained) by few a people,” Jaca added.
Bongiwe Vezi, another street vendor, said that the taxi in between the three taxis was the one that caused the accident because it was moving at a high speed.
She said, “When the robot closed the first taxi stopped and the following taxi hit it and then jumped to another taxi at the back of it.”
Simphiwe Nkosi was listening to music through her earphones in the taxi when he heard the loud noise and people screaming.
“I was at the back seat of the second taxi listening to my phone when I suddenly heard people shouting, then I was almost thrown into the seat in my front when our taxi hit another taxi,” Nkosi said.
“The woman who was seated on my side was hit by glasses on the head, she fell on top of me and almost broke my arm,” Nkosi added.
South African Police Service spokesperson, Thulane Zwane said that the SAPS have not been notified about the accident.
