Sydenham Police arrested three hijacking suspects aged between 18 and 20 and fatally wounded another two during a shootout in New Germany on Thursday.
A female victim who had been hijacked of her grey Volvo vehicle earlier in the day gave police the description of her car.The shootout came after police spotted a car suspected to be that of the female reported stolen earlier and ordered occupants to stop.
KZN police Spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said, “The suspects fired shots towards the police who returned fire.”
Three of the five suspects are said to have deserted the car and fled on foot and were later arrested. The three suspects were immediately arrested for for attempted murder, hijacking and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Two other suspects were fatally wounded during the shootout.
KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said, “We would like to warn criminals that the police will not hesitate to retaliate when their lives are in danger. It is a common trend that police officers in this province are confronted with gunfire on a daily basis when they attempt to arrest criminals. We are fortunate that none of our police officers have become statistics especially over the past few weeks.”
“Two firearms were seized and will be sent for ballistics tests to ascertain if they were used in any other crime in the country. The arrested suspects will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates Court soon on,” said Naicker.
