The Durban University of Technology Steve Biko campus hosted the official launch of the university’s radio station, “RadioDUT” this Friday.
Students came out in numbers and gathered at the food court centre to experience first hand the launch of the station and meet the people behind the Mic.
The aim of RadioDUT is to provide quality information and entertainment that speaks directly to the DUT community.
Station manager Sibusiso Nxumalo said the station is diverse, vibrant, well informed and aims to empower students during their academic lives.
“The station is all about edutainment- we deliver a relevant message to the students. We promote Holistic development and we also want to engage with all DUT campuses,” said Nxumalo.
The students were entertained with performances from the likes of Sfiso K ,Usiko le Sizwe, MC Kay and Jeffrey.
Public Relations officer Ncumisa Tyhafine, was overwhelmed by the success of the launch and believes that students will now be more active on the station.
“It was not easy to put everything in place. However, the launch was a success because the aim of the launch was to engage the students and the students were enthusiastic about the station,” Tyhafine said.
The students were given giveaways from RadioDUT t-shirts, to DUT gift bags and hampers from CellC who is one of the sponsors of the launch.
Dean of Students Amar Singh said if it was not for Sibusiso’s vision and sleepless nights RadioDUT would not exist.
He added, “No university in KwaZulu-Natal has a radio station. Students have been requesting a station for a number of years and they were not successful. However, this year the students worked together and produced a proposal that was driven by passion and they succeeded.”
The sponsors of the event include Cell C, Trade & Investment KwaZulu-Natal and Redbull.
Students enjoyed the event and were much more eager to tune in to the station.
“I was not keen on tuning in to the station but after today I will definitely support my peers and encourage students from other university’s to listen to our station,” said Information Technology student Mondli Ndlanguli.
Nxumalo concluded that they will be hosting a launch at Indumiso Campus in Pietermaritzburg next week Friday.
