Two Jozini men were sentenced to life imprisonment and 35 years in jail by the Mtubatuba High Court on Thursday.
Leornard Shoti Gina and Sandile Ngwenya were sentenced 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances, five years for kidnapping, 15 years for possession of unlicensed firearm and a life sentence for murder.
Jozini police were on their toes after the death of Reita van Vuljk (66) who was found dead on 5 March 2012 inside her ransacked house at Nkangala area in Obonjeni. On that day, police were called at the deceased’s house after blood stains were spotted by a relative who last saw her two days earlier. Most of her personal belongings and property were missing.
Through police investigation, a body of a 66-year-old woman was found with stab and gunshot wounds. A case of murder and house robbery was opened at Jozini Police Station and it was later transferred to Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit for investigation.
Thorough investigation led to the arrest of the two accused and recovery of a firearm.
“It took us a long time to conclude the investigation. However, the team that was appointed for the job did exceptionally well,” said police spokesperson Captain Zwane in a press statement.
The accused were taken to court where they were convicted and sentenced after several court appearances. The State denied them bail and they had been in custody since their arrest.
Zwane said, “Justice was served, we did everything in our power to make sure that the murderers receive the most fitting sentence for killing a defenseless woman.”
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni also commended Richards Bay Organised Crime Unit and Jozini police for working together in the same statement.
“It is not every day that police work together and have a successful investigation. Their hard work and perseverance paid off,” Ngobeni said.
